Dr. Jack Farquhar: A Mentor with A Better Way

Healthy food, hydrating water and other tools for healthy living. These diet and lifestyle factors are part of the Nutrilite philosophy for optimal health and disease prevention.

One of my mentors is Dr. John “Jack” Farquhar, a pioneer in disease prevention. I suppose, like many visionary men and women, his success grew out of frustration: He needed to find a better way. In fact, the Nutrilite™ brand and its leadership position in disease prevention is due, in large part, to Jack and his decision early in his career to find a better way.

Taking Care of Our Planet

My father was definitely on to something with his vision for a sustainable future. He envisioned a future with clean air, rich soil, happy people and a healthy planet. To him, there was no downside. People win, communities win and, most importantly, the planet wins. That was back in the 1950s. By all accounts, this kind of mindset is needed more than ever today.

Future of Food

A vine growing inside a test tube.

Food trends come and go. In the 1950s, I remember TV dinners were all the rage with their promise of convenience and efficiency. In the ‘60s, Julia Childs tempted us into the kitchen with French cuisine made simple enough for anyone to prepare. In the ‘70s, Alice Walters made dining out healthier with her crusade for California cuisine and its organic, locally sourced foods. In the ‘80s, Carlo Petrini challenged fast food with his slow food movement. On it goes with each decade bringing a new twist on how we look at the foods we eat. As we approach 2020 and look to the future, how we look at food is more important than ever.

Young man at work on a laptop. My six-step plan to share Nutrilite® products is one of the most important predictors of business success, especially in today’s digital world.

What is the best way to share Nutrilite™ products? This is one of the most frequently asked questions that I hear from people during my travels as Nutrilite’s Global Brand Ambassador. Decades later, it still is. While today’s digital marketplace is dramatically different from the local networks we fostered in days gone by, people still want one thing.

Can A Solution As Simple As Healthy Soil Reverse Climate Change?

Two Amway employees extract soil samples to measure various soil health parameters. Nutrilite farming practices utilize natural, organic plant nutrition, avoiding the use of synthetic chemicals that destroy essential microbial populations and instead focus on building up good soil biology. Trout Lake Farm, Wash., USA; 2014.

The regenerative agricultural movement is increasingly taking center stage at global discussions of climate change, and for good reason. This could be a serious solution to reversing –  yes, reversing – the negative impact of climate change. I follow these efforts with great interest. To me, the movement is actually a revitalization of the natural farming practices my father so passionately embraced decades ago (and our Nutrilite farmers use today) to nourish soil and sustainably grow organic crops. This time though, the vision is grander.
