We all know the refreshing feeling of getting a good night’s sleep. You greet the new day with energy, a clear mind and positive mood. But, just what is it about sleep that makes it so critical to good health and how can you get enough? UC Berkeley Professor Matthew Walker captured all the essentials in his book Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams. It’s easy to see why he’s the director of the university’s Sleep and Neuroimaging Lab. Sure, he’s well qualified, but Dr. Walker really loves sleep and wants all of us to love sleep, too. His book is a fascinating read. For me, six facts about sleep really captured my attention.

The Serious Benefits of Having More Fun

When I walk the halls of R&D at our Buena Park facility, I’m always on the lookout for one thing. The same holds true wherever I see employees gathering, or when I stop to chat with a distributor group touring the campus. I listen for laughter in all its forms from soft giggles to loud belly laughs. When I hear it, I can’t help but smile. Why? I believe that, when people are having fun, they are at their creative best. It’s a state that makes learning easier, work more meaningful, and life happier.

In these days of instant digital communication, a handwritten letter is as special as it is rare. Think about the last time you shuffled through your regular mail with its bills, fliers, and advertisements and in the midst of all this usual fare, you found a letter written by hand. You stopped for a moment, didn’t you? Before opening it, you likely held the letter to feel its weight and texture, perhaps admiring the stamp, as you curiously looked for who sent it.
