Our Mission

Dr. Sam on Firebird (1978) and on Double X (2015)
On the left, my younger self is standing on the Firebird with the catch of the day; July 1978. On the right, at the age of 79, I’m on the Double X eager to set sail to report back on how the health of people and the planet has changed in those passing years; November 2015.

In the summer of 1975, I began a three-year journey circumnavigating the globe aboard the Firebird, an 84-foot ketch perfectly suited for extended sailing. Looking back, I remember feeling younger and fitter as the voyage progressed, and it was during that time I became intensely interested in the cultures of the world. I couldn’t image a better way to learn about different eating habits, nutritional patterns and lifestyles.

All told, I had a chance to visit 36 countries to see firsthand what other people were doing to stay healthy. As I learned more about their daily habits, it became clear that the people who were the healthiest were also the most involved in their communities, not to mention among the happiest and most prosperous.

A new purpose hiding in plain sight

This observation solidified my belief that our ability to live a full, satisfying life, to go after our dreams, and to have the drive to act on what’s important to us, starts by taking charge of our own health. The experience had a profound effect on me, so much so that I became even more passionate about doing what I needed to do to stay healthy and active in order to take the message of optimal health around the world, which I did for four decades as the Global Brand Ambassador for Nutrilite™ brand food supplements.

The world has certainly changed since that Firebird voyage. Some changes have been positive such as the incredible advances in computer technology that allow us to quickly access a wealth of information at our fingertips, stay connected and share what matters. Other changes, unfortunately, are testing the limits of our fragile planet and its ability to support a world population that is spiraling upward to over 7 billion in 2016.

Mission possible

If ever there were a time to focus on optimal health, it’s now. Our planet needs us, and it needs us at our healthiest so that we have enough energy, focus and stamina to tackle the environmental and other challenges we face today.

[pullquote]To me there is no question that the changes each one of us makes can have a profound effect—one day at a time, one person at a time, one community at a time—and ultimately make our world a better place for all.[/pullquote]

One of my favorite quotes is attributed to Mahatma Gandhi and reads, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” To me there is no question that the changes each one of us makes can have a profound effect—one day at a time, one person at a time, one community at a time—and ultimately make our world a better place for all.

Making a difference, together

The time is right. I sincerely hope you will join me in the conversation to share and inspire changes at every level that can lead to a brighter future for this planet we call home.
